Heidfeld is also in Mercedes' sights
Norbert Haug has confirmed contacts between Mercedes and Nick Heidfeld regarding next season. Previously it had already been learned that the thirty-two-year-old German was also in the running to take Heikki Kovalainen's place at McLaren, despite recent visits by Kimi Raikkonen and Jenson Button to the team's factory.
“We are also talking to Nick Heidfeld,” Haug, the Mercedes sporting director, told German news agency DPA.
“Mercedes-Benz supports the idea of signing a German driver who is experienced and capable. However, there is no reason why we should decide hastily,” he added.
There have also been rumors that Mercedes could sign Heidfeld, but instead of placing him at McLaren, the veteran driver would take a place at Brawn. In fact, further news on the collaboration between the Stuttgart manufacturer and the new world champions is expected this week.
On his official website nickheidfeld.com, the German stated that he was not worried about his future, even if he did not have a season up to expectations with his disappointing BMW-Sauber.
“Luckily the team managers can see beyond that,” he said. “All in all I'm really optimistic about the future.”
Although it is not yet official Nico Rosberg has already signed with Brawn for 2010 and now there is the possibility that the team is trying to get rid of Jenson Button to form an all-German "superteam".
