F1 | British GP, the analysis of the strategies at Silverstone

The British Grand Prix was won by Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz who started from pole position, but this is only half the story with the race conditioned by a red flag on the first lap and all but two drivers (Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo of McLaren) who changed the tyres.

The presence of the Safety car in the closing stages was the other crucial moment, arriving with perfect timing for Sergio Perez (Red Bull), who reached second place after a complicated start, but making life difficult for Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) , which remained on the track with used P Zero White hard tires, slipping to fourth place. Leclerc, in the lead at the restart, was overtaken by Sainz, Perez and Hamilton who had opted for a new set of P Zero Red softs.

Hard, Medium, Soft played a fundamental role, with the three compounds present from the starting grid and the first four riders at the finish line on three different strategies. A factor that subsequently contributed to breathtaking duels up to the grand finale with the fight down to the last corner for seventh place between Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Haas driver Mick Schumacher, which saw the German score his first points in the Championship of the F1 World.

How the compounds made the difference

HARD: Resistant compound, capable of long stints, more difficult to bring to temperature in today's relatively cool conditions with around 20 degrees centigrade in the environment and just over 30 on the asphalt. Once it reached its operating window, the tire showed great consistency.

MEDIUM: The main tire of the race, chosen by most drivers when restarting on the second lap. He combined performance and durability, with Perez managing to complete 34 laps, the real key to the Mexican's impressive recovery.

SOFT: Compound that guaranteed the desired extra grip – it allowed Verstappen to overtake Sainz at the start – and after the safety car was chosen by most of the drivers for the final sprint to the finish line. Hamilton achieved the fastest lap of the race on the soft tyre, reaching the podium and providing endless excitement to the almost 400 thousand spectators present at Silverstone.

Mario Isola, head of F1 and Car Racing at Pirelli

“We witnessed one of the most exciting races in recent years. Firstly, we are all truly relieved and grateful that the drivers involved in the scary first-lap crash are safe – a testament to the impressive safety standards the sport has achieved. That said, we witnessed one of the most exciting races of recent years, with duels spread throughout the race and the different strategies that proved to be a key element of the competition. Those who are still wondering whether the new 2022 car-tyre package has improved the show and increased overtaking have had their answer today!!”
