Hermanos Rodriguez could drop out of the calendar in 2020

Formula 1 | GP Mexico, government ready not to renew the contract with Liberty Media

Despite the award of best event of 2018 awarded by the FIA, the Mexican Grand Prix seems in strong doubt as regards the 2020 season. According to what was reported by various Mexican media, in fact, at the Hermanos Rodriguez it would have ended up in the crosshairs of the Movement of National Regeneration, with the latter wanting to cut costs arising from the organization of the event.

The new Mexican president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, is in fact considering an austerity plan, with the aim of reviving an economy now on the brink of an abyss, and the plan would include cutting expenses deriving from Grand Prix.

The latter is organized thanks to a portion of state contributions and the objective of the new government would be precisely to intervene on these funds, blocking their exit from state coffers. The contract between the organizers and Liberty, we remember, will expire at the end of 2019, but at the moment the possibility of a renewal appears far away.

“We have to find a way to resolve this situation we find ourselves in”, explained Ana Guevara, a member of the National Sports Commission of Mexico. “Our intention is clear and it is not to use taxes to keep events like the Formula 1 Grand Prix alive. We have more important problems to take into consideration, given that an extremely large part of the population lives below the poverty line , working hard and quite a bit."

“It was precisely corruption that allowed the return of F1 to Mexico, given that many bribes were paid to bring the event back to Mexico, and we do not consider this acceptable”he concluded.
