F1 | Carey: “Honda leaves for economic reasons”

Honda will leave Formula 1 at the end of this season and in making the announcement, the Japanese company specified that the main reason concerns their future projects: to continue research and development for replacement energy sources with the objective of "carbon free” by 2050.

However, Liberty Media CEO Chase Carey believes there are other reasons:

"I believe the decision was made primarily due to economic problems within the Honda group -he declared to Marca- I think this was the main reason."

According to others, however, it had become too expensive for Honda try to break Mercedes' dominance, according to the current 'engine' rules:

"There is no doubt that the economic aspects of Formula 1 must also be taken into consideration. But I think Honda felt that more economic pressure was coming and that some decisions had to be made.".

Carey, who will leave his role to Stefano Domenicali starting next year, nevertheless said he was optimistic about future regulations:

“We are seeing growing interest in the next generation of engines, both within and outside of Formula 1. We are receiving more and more support, not only from producers involved in the sport, but also from those who are not yet here."
