Formula 1 | Ecclestone against F1TV: “Streaming races don't bring money”

In a chat given to the microphones of the Croatian magazine Akrapovic, Bernie Ecclestone criticized the management of Formula 1 by Liberty Media, specifying how streaming of the races on the internet via the official F1TV platform risks significantly penalizing the collection of sponsors and partner.

According to the British manager, large-scale events such as Formula 1 must be seen on television to have the right resonance from an economic point of view. In fact, streaming is exploited via PC, tablet or smartphone and the size of the screens penalizes, in his opinion, the visibility of the brands on the cars and along the circuits.

“The thing I don't like most about Formula 1 by Liberty Media is that it is available in streaming on smartphones, PCs and tablets”, said the British Manager. “I think that large-scale events should only be seen on TV. Sponsors don't like small screens as you can't read their logos well on the cars or around the circuit. This is a system that historically does not make money. Soon the partners will ask themselves why they make these budgets available for something that doesn't work properly."

There are also criticisms for social media management: “I don't understand the work they are doing with Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. I don't think people could become more interested in Formula 1 through these channels. I am increasingly convinced that Liberty Media purchased Formula 1 without having a clear idea of the product, also because Americans are certainly not crazy about Formula 1. It's nothing new."
