Formula 1 | Racing Bulls, from Red Bull suspension and gearbox

Laurent Mekies: "We are building a new team on an already extraordinary basis"

With the new sponsorship, theAlpha Tauri became Racing Bulls, and in fact it is a bit of a return to its origins, that is when it was called bull rosso, but with a collaboration that seems to be increasingly important with the parent company RedBull. La VCARB01 presented this morning at Las Vegas will have some components of the reigning world champion car, i.e suspension and gearbox, and this also influenced the construction of a single-seater whose objective is to break away from the back of the group, and if possible also fight for important positions in the race. Laurent mekies he is the new team principal, former sporting director of Ferrari but already in Toro Rosso as an engineer since its foundation in 2006 before going to FIA in 2014.

“We are building a new team on an extraordinary basis – Mekies said. We have had two locations for a long time, namely Faenza and Bicester, and the departments of the latter operational base, where the aerodynamic team is located together with some design functions, will be moving to new facilities in Milton Keynes. Historically it's a disadvantage to have two locations, but it's 2024 and the world has changed enormously, as has the way people interact. We are not taking much of the maximum allowed by Red Bull, but something important is there when you are part of the same company. The regulations are very clear about what you have to do yourself and what you can buy. Historically, for example, it is accepted that you can get the engine from third parties, and together with the power unit you can also have the suspensions, these are the main parts when you decide to rely on other manufacturers".

Laurent Mekies, Racing Bulls team principal

“The regulations ensure that you do the rest of the car yourself, and I'm talking about chassis, aerodynamics and cooling systems, i.e. everything that affects performance, this is something that defines the manufacturers and the regulations are very clear. We're in a situation where there's one owner of two teams, so we're being asked what we can share and we're looking at the regulations. As for what is part of our work, which is a large part of the car, we are pushing hard to fight for important positions. There are downsides, for example when you take the gearbox from someone else, which many teams do, you will have to wait for it to be designed before working out where to mount the suspension points, and this will affect aerodynamic decisions, there are trade-offs to consider ”.
