F1 | Renault shocked: Red Bull will not fit the new MGU-K specification designed for the Austrian GP

Red Bull will not use the new specification of the MGU-K engine during the next Austrian Grand Prix, the ninth round of the 2018 Formula One World Championship. According to what was reported by the Marca newspaper, in fact, the Austrian Scuderia would have chosen to postpone the arrival of the new component designed by Renault, preferring to take risks from a reliability point of view rather than suffer a grid penalty in their home Grand Prix. A curious and absolutely surprising choice, especially after the many problems experienced by Daniel Ricciardo in the last three weekends in Monaco, Canada and France.

The version currently in use, remember, is the same as 2017 and has imperfections from a technical point of view, a factor that has caused numerous breakages over the last two seasons.

Cyril Abiteboul, when asked on the issue, confirmed the scenario described by the Spanish newspaper today, underlining how this choice places the Austrian team in an extremely difficult position from a reliability point of view.

“The new MGU-K engine will be available in Austria for all cars that want it”, said Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul. “Not all of our customers have chosen to use the upgrade, but it is something we cannot oppose. One team will continue to use the old 2017 spec, keeping in mind that the risk of breakages will be much greater. However, this is our philosophy and we can only accept all the decisions of our customers."
