On the podium a diligent Bottas and an excellent Verstappen, Leclerc once again stands out

F1 | Canadian GP report cards – Vettel on a record-breaking rampage, Hamilton in difficulty, Raikkonen not arriving

The Canadian GP (rating 7,5) it's a six-way fight on the edge of a hundredths, with the top three in the class making the gap and with Ferrari taking their third victory of the season, thanks to a Sebastian Vettel in a state of grace.

Sebastian Vettel 10 cum laude This weekend is living, breathing history, it's a mission that's forcefully back in fashion, a refrain very red and very sweet. His Montreal is all in post-match happiness as he proudly waves the Cavallino banner. An amazing qualification, an authoritative race, the eleventh solo as a Ferrari driver has a special flavour, and it's not just because of that tiny lead in the world championship standings. Third victory of the season, fiftieth in his career. PHENOMENAL

Valtteri Bottas 9 He outclasses Hamilton all weekend and keeps the exuberant Verstappen at bay. Place of honor of great value, against a Vettel who was at times unbeatable. WILLING

Max Verstappen 8 The slip-ups in the press conference were followed - fortunately for him and Red Bull - by a display of talent and substance. Fast in qualifying and careful in the race, he tries to undermine Bottas' second place without luck. Monte Carlo is far away. REDEEMED

Daniel Ricciardo 7,5 In Montreal he doesn't shine like he did in Monaco, appearing less at ease than his teammate. However, one question hangs over his race: could Max have passed if he had stayed on the track one or two more laps? It is not a hypothesis to be discarded. WOODEN MEDAL

lewis hamilton 6 Both in practice and in the race he fails to make a difference in "his" Montreal. On the eve he was considered the super favourite, and instead we saw him helplessly suffer Ricciardo's overcut in the dance of the stops, only to then be unable to mount a response to his Red Bull colleague on the track. From the first laps he complains about a lack of power, the mileage of his engine begins to take its toll. OUT OF PHASE

Kimi Raikkonen 5 Fifth in qualifying and sixth in the race, but it's as if he wasn't there. While his teammate puts his signature to a historic day for the Cavallino (40 years since Gilles' victory and 14 since Schumi's last on this track) he fiddles around on the track without having the slightest impact. Weekend too colorless to be true. SUBMISSIVE

Nico Hulkenberg e Carlos Sainz 7,5 Tandem race and in the points for the two Enstone standard-bearers. Two consistent drivers. Thanks to the points scored by the duo race after race, Renault is now fourth in the world championship. Not bad. CONCRETE

Esteban Ocon 6,5 Well done because once again he does better than Sergio Perez (undertone, vote 5), but he can do nothing against Hulkenberg and Sainz, with a Renault that is overall more competitive than Force India, a lot of engine and little else.

Charles Leclerc 8 Brings Alfa Romeo Sauber to the points for the third time. This alone would be enough, but if we add yet another Q2 achieved in qualifying and the maturity demonstrated in the wheel-to-wheel duel with Alonso, the picture is truly complete. PREDESTINATED

Pierre Gasly 7,5 From nineteenth to eleventh, his is a great race that went a little too quietly....REMUNTED

Romain Grosjean 7,5 As above, his is also a great comeback, and the almost fifty laps on ultrasoft tires (!) are a real record. Arrives ahead of Kevin Magnussen (5,5) which started well ahead of him

Marcus Ericsson 4,5 The mistake he made in qualifying condemned him to start from behind, he limited himself to bringing the car to the finish line. In the last few races the gap with Leclerc has opened up a little too much. DISAPPOINTING

Stoffel Vandoorne 4,5 It's a short step from talent to carneade...another anonymous GP, with this McLaren which certainly doesn't help.

Fernando Alonso 6 Great start and usual generosity in duels. But the Renault engine (tu quoque…) takes it down without any fuss. 300 AND I'M (SAD)

Sergey Sirotkin 5 More ninja than pilot, because you never see it. Yet he is there, starting seventeenth and finishing seventeenth. He's happy...

Lance Stroll 4 He loses the car in a delicate point, in a tense moment, and sends Hartley to the wall. More of a passenger than a runaway beast than a culprit, but that's it...

Brendon Hartley 6,5 Of encouragement. Because the qualifying was really positive and he bears no responsibility for the terrible accident in which he was involved.

The checkered flag given in advance 2 Like the laps ahead with which the Canadian GP officially ended. Because to respect motorsport we must respect its rites and forms, like that of a flag that decrees the end of hostilities, the longed-for rest for the gladiator tightened by the belts, wrapped in his fireproof suit, dripping with sweat, who deserves to raise the visor and breathe, but at the right time, when les jeux sont faits, and not when the first VIP gets up and waves the sacred flag with superficiality.
