F1 | Vettel: “Alonso was the toughest opponent I raced against”

Sebastian Vettel has no doubts. The German, who will hang up his helmet at the end of 2022 at the end of his two-year experience with Aston Martin, admitted that Fernando Alonso was the toughest rival to face in his Formula 1 career. Vettel and Alonso were antagonists world championship level in the 2010 and 2012 seasons, which resulted in the final victories of the then Red Bull driver who got the better of the Spaniard in the final events of those championships held in Abu Dhabi and Interlagos.

“The best driver I raced against? I would say Michael and Lewis – declared Vettel, interviewed by talkSPORT – Why? Because the numbers speak for themselves. Michael was my hero and Lewis is the best statistically."

The German then, when asked specifically who his toughest rival had been, replied: “Fernando. I fought with him in various championships and throughout my career he was always there. Very competitive. I think he was the most difficult opponent to face."
