F1 drivers worried about the degradation of the Pirellis
Three top drivers expressed concern about the degradation shown by the Pirelli tyres.
This is Vettel's opinion, declared to the Austrian Servus TV: “The problem is that they degrade too quickly. Around lap 16 or 17 they destroy themselves."
The German explained that the degradation could slow drivers down by 10 seconds per lap "or even more", and that Pirelli now has no time to redesign new tires for 2011.
The Red Bull driver continued, stating that it is wrong to say that certain drivers who are "kinder" to the tires will have an advantage with tires that deteriorate more easily: "The fact is that after a certain number of laps the rubber runs out, it doesn't matter what the pilot does."
El Pais reports Alonso's words: "The hard ones behave exactly like the soft ones."
Adrian Sutil, Force India driver, told Auto Motor und Sport that when the Pirellis decay “It's like being in a touring car. Or ride with intermediates. I tried to drive differently, resulting in myself being 20% slower than at the start of the stint, and in this way the tires perhaps lasted one lap longer. We will probably all pit together and quite often.”
Sutil speculated that, given the limited number of dry tires available to the drivers, there will likely be less action during free practice.
And he concluded: "Once the tires run out, it no longer makes sense to continue running to try other components."
