F1 | Barcelona and plans for the future: the goal is to extend the contract beyond 2026

F1 Barcelona – Despite Madrid's slow entry, recently made official as the new home of the Spanish Grand Prix starting from the 2026 Formula 1 season, the Barcelona circuit intends to retain its slot within the world calendar.

According to what was declared by Roget Torrent, Minister of Enterprise and Employment of the Government of Catalonia and President of the Barcelona Circuit, the management of the Montmelò track is working closely with Stefano Domenicali for the extension of the current agreement, the which foresees the commitment of the circuit scheduled until 2026. A date that the Catalan governance wants to move forward, possibly as far as possible, given the importance of the Grand Prix for the entire region.

The contract node for Torrent

“We have a contract up to and including 2026 and we are working, as Stefano Domenicali said, on an extension. We want to have Formula 1 in Catalonia for many more years. We have been talking for some time and following our own rhythms, without external interference of any kind. The relationship between Catalonia and Formula 1 will be decided by Catalonia, precisely, and by Formula 1. Nobody will put pressure on us. Up to now it has been a positive, excellent relationship, and we want to continue like this for a long time to come."

Barcelona ready to take a step forward

To obtain the coveted renewal time, Barcelona could soon start works that will affect not only the circuit, but also the infrastructure and facilities. A 360° transformation that aims to transform Montmelò into the most modern track in Europe: “We are modernizing the structures and everything that is needed. We want to transform it into the best circuit in Europe. Here we experienced some extraordinary matches with which we recovered the spirit that Montmeló, historically, has always had. It is the best possible business card for the racetrack. By nature I am very optimistic and nothing makes me think I can change things at the moment."
