FIA: new limitations for exhausts and mapping in F1 in 2012

The FIA has communicated to Formula 1 teams new limitations for exhaust and engine mapping in view of 2012 to prevent teams from exploiting exhaust gases to obtain aerodynamic advantages.

Despite the ban on blown diffusers with the return to high-pitched exhausts for 2012, Ross Brawn expressed fears this week that some teams could still exploit gray areas in the regulations in this area, saying he expected "some pretty creative solutions" to next season.

The FIA, having made the necessary checks on any regulatory gaps, therefore reacted by issuing a Technical Directive this week informing the teams of new and severe limitations in terms of mapping of the standard electronic control unit. Not all teams would have been thrilled to hear the news because it effectively removes a gray area for car development and some teams have expressed concerns which will be discussed at a meeting of the Technical Working Group this week.
