F1: the introduction of electric motors in the pitlane postponed

The FIA has agreed to postpone the introduction of electric motors for use in the pitlane in F1. The Federation had imposed the use of zero-emission units in the pitlane starting from 2014.

Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari would have asked the Federation for an extension which would then have agreed.

Engine engineers have expressed their concern regarding the increase in development costs and safety: the absence of noise, typical of electric motors, would be a danger for the staff in the pitlane.

The postponement is expected to be ratified at the next meeting of the World Motor Sport Council at the end of the year. A three-year extension is expected.
