F1 | Mercedes, Toto Wolff: “Subdued race, but happy with our drivers”
The team principal reflects on the last race of the year, but the mystery deepens over the future of Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff himself
Mercedes' season ends with a double podium, but without victory: the Brackley team, in fact, handed the weekend into the hands of Max Verstappen and Red Bull, too fast on the Abu Dhabi circuit compared to slightly slower W11s. ' subdued compared to the rest of the season. Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton didn't really manage to worry the Dutch driver, but they do the bare minimum.
"First of all, congratulations to Max and Red Bull; they deserved the victory, they were the fastest – said team principal Toto Wolff – our drivers suffered from understeer throughout the race, losing a lot of time in turns 5, 6 and 7, but also in the last sector. Friday's performances looked promising, but we weren't able to replicate them over the rest of the weekend; but as always, we look at these mistakes as lessons that make us stronger for the future. The positive thing is the performance of our drivers. Valtteri has had some complicated weekends, but he was good here, maximizing the car's potential; I also believe that we unlocked something for the future during this weekend. As for Lewis, we saw his courage and tenacity: returning to the car less than two weeks after testing positive for covid-19 proves his commitment to the team and his great desire to compete.".
Attention now shifts from the track and focuses on the contracts of Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton: both confirm to the media that they want to continue writing history with Mercedes, but to date no signature has yet been placed on any contract and deepens the mystery about the future of Mercedes.
