F1 | McLaren, Ricciardo: “The engine suddenly stopped”

The 2022 Italian Grand Prix will also be remembered for the final Safety Car which deprived all the fans of the last laps of the battle for the third position on the podium behind Verstappen and Leclerc. The safety car exited due to the retirement of Daniel Ricciardo, who was forced to abandon his McLaren between the two Lesmo corners after the engine suddenly stopped. The gearbox of the Australian driver's MCL36 was stuck, so he could do nothing to park in a safe place. All a great joke, given that up until that moment he was in fifth position after a great race.

“It was nice to start from the front and without any problems – said Ricciardo after the Monza race. Lando didn't get a great start, so I passed him and was third, but I saw Max right behind me, he obviously had another pace. I was trying to keep the pace in fourth place but we didn't have any, I could only keep Gasly behind. The race was challenging, I tried to resist and do what I could and with the hard tire the pace wasn't bad at all, but suddenly the engine stopped after turn 6 and I had to pull over immediately because the gearbox was stuck , so I couldn't get to a safe place. It would have been nice to get points, but obviously it had to go like this."
