F1 | Bottas struggled to accept Hamilton's superiority
The Finnish driver returned to talk about his five-year stint at Mercedes
Defined by Toto wolff the ideal squire at the time, Valtteri Bottas he has bittersweet memories of his experience in Mercedes, which also gave him his ten career victories and two world championship second places (2019 and 2020).
The current Sauber driver returned to talk about his time as teammate of Lewis Hamilton stating that in those five years (2017-2021) he had to work a lot on himself to accept some things and above all to metabolise the fact that Hamilton was a better driver than him.
The world championship was in Bottas's thoughts, but the Scandinavian driver quickly realized that he did not have the consistency of performance of Hamilton, a driver with whom over time he later formed a sincere friendship.
“For five years I denied myself the evidence, and every year I started with the idea of being able to win the title – Bottas' confession to Motorsport.com -. Only at the end of my experience at Mercedes did I notice that I had less difficulty in admitting certain things. Only in the fifth year of living together did I really accept that Lewis was a better driver for the same car over the course of a season. As a rider it's difficult to admit certain things. The team was always transparent with me, even though my situation was difficult because I had a contract that expired from year to year. I knew that winning the title would be complicated, the discussions with the team were open, the data was objective. On the other hand, I also knew that if I started being an asshole... I would just lose my seat."
