Negative qualifying for Kimi Raikkonen, out in Q1 at COTA and eighteenth final time. However, Iceman will start three positions ahead due to the penalties received by Russell, Vettel and Alonso, who will start from the rear for having replaced their respective power units. Apart from this however a real disappointment for the Finnish pit side of Alfa Romeo Racing, nothing went right on this American Saturday.

“It wasn't a good day, none of the laps went well – Kimi admitted. I went sideways on the first attempt, the second was canceled and in the final I lost time. It's not ideal, it's one of those bad days where nothing goes as it should. We will recover some positions with the penalties of the others, but in the race we will have to be more determined."
