Vettel: “A phenomenal day”
In Malaysia, first victory in Ferrari for the German
Sebastian Vettel admitted that he felt a lot of emotion in the final laps of the Malaysian GP, the race that gave him his first victory at the wheel of Ferrari. Vettel dominated at Sepang with a two-stop strategy, returning Ferrari to the top step of the podium after almost two years.
“I had to calm down a bit in the last laps, I was looking at the top of the chassis and thinking 'this is a Red, you're going to win!'. And then I had to stop thinking about it to avoid making mistakes. It was truly a relief to cross the finish line!” Vettel said.
Vettel's emotion was clearly visible even on the podium with the German relieved after a difficult 2014: “A phenomenal day. How do I feel? It's amazing, seeing the guys when I looked down from the podium. I can only remember Fernando's victories with Ferrari and especially those of Michael (Schumacher). It's incredible to be part of this team, it's something special. Obviously it makes me very happy. It's the first victory in more than a year. I missed not only the champagne but also the top step. It's fantastic to be back winning after a tough season in which I wasn't able to understand the car. This year the car seems better suited to me and Kimi than last year."
“I'm very happy, today's strategy was obviously a winner. A big thank you to the guys, they were fantastic. We were a bit surprised when we saw on Friday that they weren't happy with the medium compound and Lewis struggled in the first stint so I was able to stay with him, I had a lot of fun. After that I knew I had to push, try to make the tires last a long time and try to push as hard as I could. In the second stint he was chasing me, it was tough, he had a great second stint but I was able to rebalance the car and open a good gap in the last laps”.
