Formula 1 | Wolff: “Budget cap protects us from ourselves”

La formula 1 has entered the third year of budget cap. The spending limit, which is around 135 million euros, was inserted to limit costs especially after the tragic pandemic period due to the COVID-19, which also caused enormous damage to the Circus' economy. The three top teams, that is Ferrari, Red Bull e Mercedes, considered by many as spendthrifts, they had created an unbridgeable gap with the rest of the grid, and with the arrival of Liberty Media in a few years it was decided to change this way of doing things, and the managers of the big teams themselves approve, as recently declared by Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal.

“The key change was the budget cap introduced by Chase Carey – Toto told The Times. It was done to protect us from ourselves: we come from a situation where Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari were fighting an uncontrolled spending war, and the smaller teams were not competitive. The cost cap was based on a project that has existed in the USA for a long time: in the NFL and NBA you have a limit on the amount of money you can spend on your roster, and Formula 1 introduced it for technical development and it was the point of breakthrough for the business side of the sport, and suddenly we all gained."
