Formula 1 | Whiting explains the sack flag error: "The commissioner present on the stage misinterpreted a question"

In an interview with Auto Motor Und Sport, Charlie Whiting spoke about the blunder committed by Winnie Harlow during the last minutes of the Canadian Grand Prix, with the checkered flag displayed two laps before the natural conclusion of the race. The error, according to the race director, arose from a bad communication between the control center and the commissioner present on the stage, with the latter giving the model the OK by interpreting a question as an answer. An inexplicable blunder that did not allow Daniel Ricciardo to set the fastest lap of the race (the Australian scored his best lap on the 70th lap, but the race ended two laps earlier, precisely from the 68th lap. Ed.).

Here are the words of Charlie Whiting: “Regarding the checkered flag, Winnie Harlow received the order too early and she is not to blame for the mistake. The commissioner present on the stage misinterpreted a question, mistaking it as an answer. Mistakes are part of the game and the unexpected will always have to be taken into account as long as there is a human figure managing these events."
