However, it all began in 2013, when in GP3 he was preparing to win the championship against Carlos Sainz.

“Today Carlos and I are good friends – admits Kvyat. When we were teammates, however, there were moments of tension: we traveled a lot together, and there were skirmishes on the track, so much so that sometimes our fathers were forced to intervene and tell us to calm down. In 2013 I was in GP3, and during the season Marko told us that a place in Formula 1 was available for the following year, and whoever did best between the two of us would be the starter, and that's when the thing changed. became serious. In Belgium that year we started first and second, and we were very close in the standings, almost equal on points, so I had to win, and so I did, also taking advantage of Carlos' difficulties."

“At the time there was another European Formula 3 championship with a slightly different car, and Helmut wanted me to do some races there so I could adapt to that type of car, and I won in that category too. I remember a race at the Red Bull Ring, I took three pole positions out of three, it was a very important step also because he had come to see me. Carlos realized that he had to do something else, so he went to the World Series by Renault to prove that he could drive different cars, but he wasn't doing so well. A lot of things went in my favor, I won the GP3 title and was offered the contract with Toro Rosso before the last race. It was a great achievement to sign that paper."
