Ferrari: Unity is strength

One of the Scuderia's strengths in facing the 2014 challenge is the possibility of developing the powertrain and the car that will house it together, under the same symbolic roof. After all, Ferrari is the only team that, from 1950 to today, has been able to exploit this circumstance year after year, occasionally joined by other manufacturers. The Technical Director of the Scuderia, James Allison, is well aware of this and has had the opportunity to experience firsthand what it means for a designer to be in the conditions in which he finds himself at Ferrari or in those in which the majority of the competitors are in of the Red.

“Being able to build the engine and chassis together is certainly a great advantage for Ferrari” – said James on the occasion of the presentation of the 059/3 – “Other teams cannot do the same and installation will never be as complex as this year. of the new power unit on the single-seater chassis. I have direct experience from when I was at Lotus: it is true that the engine supplier tries to meet your needs but it is never the same as what happens here, where there is a historical culture linked to joint work in the definition and in the development of the new car project."

“We have worked closely in recent years with our chassis colleagues” – added Marmorini – “precisely because we know that it makes no sense for us engine engineers to put too much emphasis on our single project if it doesn't fit into a winning car. This happened not only with regards to the engine but also for everything concerning the other elements of this powertrain which, as you can understand, is much more complex than in the past".

“I can only agree with Luca” – concluded James – “The discussion also applies to an element that in recent years has been at the center of attention such as exhausts. Blowing them offered some interesting technical challenges but I must say that, personally, I am pleased that they have been eliminated and that we can go back to designing exhausts to make the most of the engine's power."
