F1 | Whiting on the Verstappen case: “We will have a chat about what happened in Italy”

In an interview with Autosport, Charlie Whiting spoke about the controversies sparked by Max Verstappen during the last Italian Grand Prix, underlining how we shouldn't pay too much attention to comments made during a battle on the track.

According to the Director of the FIA ​​there will be a small briefing on the subject during the next round in Singapore, but nothing that could put the Dutchman in a difficult position. Verstappen, we remember, complained about the five position penalties deriving from an excessively extreme defensive maneuver against Valtteri Bottas, with the latter who, during his attempt to attack the podium, found no space on the outside of the first variant, finishing long and once again behind the Red Bull standard-bearer.

Here are the words of Charlie Whiting: “I don't think you should pay too much attention to comments made during a battle. The Verstappen case is emblematic, but I'm sure we will have a little chat about this at the next briefing. In the heat of the duel, as I always say, these things must absolutely be foreseen."

On the Bottas-Verstappen episode in Monza he added: “Max crossed the first chicane, but didn't actually overtake. The problem arises from the fact that a maneuver of this kind could be carried out every lap, justifying itself with a simple "I was in front anyway". In reality there is a saving of time”.

“We told the teams that they would have a wild card and we followed this path towards Verstappen, then penalizing the second contact for other reasons”he concluded.
