F1 | Vasseur: “Leclerc has the characteristics of champions”

Frederic Vasseur admitted that he has an eye on his driver during the 2018 season at Sauber and that in his opinion, Charles Leclerc has the characteristics to become a world champion. In his first season at Ferrari, despite some mistakes the Monegasque achieved two victories, ten podiums and seven pole positions.

“I think one of Charles' characteristics, which is that of champions, is his safety in the car. Sometimes they manage to do something extraordinary because they have full confidence in themselves. And this allows them when they are out of the car, to have self-criticism, to blame themselves, because they know perfectly well that they have the potential, they are champions and they can say 'Ok let's forget this session, today I drove badly'. This is good for the team because you could go in the wrong direction."

Vasseur added that Leclerc is the only driver outside of his team that he follows and that in his opinion he deserves all the success 200%:

“I'm happy for him because he had a great season which could have been maybe a little better without the mistakes in Bahrain and other races, but he did a great job. He has incredible pace in qualifying, it's quite impressive. I'm more than happy for him because for me he deserves it 200%. He is the only one I keep an eye on”.
