Force India executive director proposes initiative to reduce costs

F1 | Szafnauer: “Let's set a budget cap of 150 million”

The intent of Liberty Medium it is quite well known: cutting expenses in the world of formula 1. For years there have been rumors of the possible introduction of a budget cap to be assigned to each team, in order to reduce the financial outlay and standardize the level. Otmar Szafnauer, executive director of Force India, embraced the budget cap idea: “We are pragmatic, saying that this roof will be added soon is difficult” – said Szafnauer. “There are teams that spend $250 million and have a thousand employees. With 100 million less to spend, they would have to get rid of 300/500 people in a year. But we would still be able to do fantastic work for the fans if we spent just $150 million. Furthermore, half of the teams are already below this figure. Only four out of ten teams spend more than that amount".

Szafnauer then remarked on one of the main problems of Formula 1, namely “the moment in which a person leaves one team for another, spilling the beans on what happens in the previous team. Whistleblowing would probably be the biggest deterrent" – commented Szafnauer.
