F1: Still gaps in exhaust rules for 2012

The blown exhaust controversy in Formula 1 may not be resolved for a few months. According to the magazine Auto Motor und Sport there would be some gray areas in the new rules for the 2012 season which will require the exhausts to be positioned in the upper area of the bodywork instead of lower in the diffuser area.

A gap would in fact allow us to continue using exhaust gases with an aerodynamic function even with high exhausts next year. Some technical directors have already raised the issue during a meeting at the Nurburgring.

Sauber technical director James Key admitted that the new rules could have several gaps: “It's difficult to say what will happen, the teams will have six months to think about how to exploit them. With the new rules, however, we will not get to the situation seen this year."
