F1 | Sepang, the foreign press hopes for a return within the calendar
“I would like Sepang or Istanbul Park,” said Russian commentator Popov
Interviewed by Match TV, Alexey Popov spoke about the track that will occupy the slot vacated by Vietnam within the 2020 calendar, underlining how the hope is to see the Sepang track again after an absence of three seasons.
According to the Russian commentator, the Malaysian track can count on unique characteristics for a tilkodromo, an aspect that should push Liberty Media and Formula 1 to evaluate its new entry into the championship after the sensational farewell in 2017.
“Regarding the slot not yet assigned, the rumors almost immediately reported an interest from Istanbul Park and Sepang,” Popov said. “Personally I am a big fan of the Malaysian track and I was there when they organized the first race in 1999.”
“It was the first “tilkodromo” and I loved it from that moment on,” he continued. “Its exit from the calendar was a big defeat for Formula 1. So, if they asked me which track I would like on the calendar, I would definitely say Sepang.”
“If I had to choose three new tracks this year, I would definitely say Istanbul, and I don't want any tracks for Mugello, Imola or the Nurburgring. The asphalt will no longer be a problem next year and it is a fast and technical track. He deserves to be in Formula 1." he concluded.
