F1 | Ricciardo: “When you can't win you have to be good at keeping your motivation high”

Daniel Ricciardo's start to the season was particularly complicated. In the transition from Renault to McLaren, the Australian driver certainly took a step forward in terms of the car available, but the adaptation with the MCL35M was far from easy. With Norris able to provide important performances and take podiums, the former Red Bull had several difficulties. This time however, reached by Autosport, Daniel also spoke about the motivation a driver must have when he is not able to constantly fight for victories and podiums over the course of a season.

“In a certain sense you have to change the approach a little – Ricciardo admitted. We need to have a different mentality and create different objectives, where victory does not necessarily lie in first place at the finish line. Going on the podium with Renault for example was equivalent to taking a victory, so I knew that by achieving a result like that I would feel like a race winner. Obviously, however, there is nothing better than winning a race, that's why I started being a driver, but if you're not part of the top teams you have to set other goals for yourself and keep your motivation high. This is probably the only sport in the world with such a low winning percentage. For example, in a team sport, 50% of the time you win, right? In Formula 1 my percentage is probably 2% or something like that. It's crazy, so you have to find other ways to enjoy it, I guess."
