F1 | Red Bull, Brawn in favor of replacing Perez
"I would like to see someone more competitive, Sergio is no competition to Verstappen", the thoughts of the English engineer
Ross Brawn would be inclined to put alongside a talented driver like Max Verstappen a more competitive teammate than the current one Sergio Perez. In fact, the Mexican was the protagonist of a year to forget, where he did very well in the very first races (where among other things he achieved the only two successes of 2023 so far) only to then pay the price in the long run in the comparison with the Dutch.
The former general director of Formula 1, interviewed by TalkSport, not only spoke about the pair of the Anglo-Austrian team but also focused attention on the main competitors. For Brawn, in fact, the gap in 2023 is destined to decrease, with the former Ferrari technical director giving value to his thesis by discussing the improvements shown on the track by McLaren to date second in strength behind the steamroller Red Bull.
“Despite the dominance of Red Bull that we are witnessing there are indications – said Brawn – McLaren with Norris and occasionally with Piastri is knocking, so to speak, on the door. I want to be optimistic that there can be a reset this winter. When you're in front you can start designing the future single-seater first and you have an advantage, being able to extend a dominance that can last several years."
Brawn then added: “I would like to see someone more competitive in the other car, because unfortunately Perez is not giving Verstappen as much competition. He can be exciting, in the years of dominance, if there is also a competitive driver in the other car who can give a hard time. For example, as happened with Hamilton and Rosberg, it was a fantastic year in which Mercedes dominated."
