F1 | Prost goes against the trend: "In 2001 I paid 28 million for the engines, compared to the current 17"
The Frenchman, to highlight the clear reduction in costs, uses his experience with the Prost Grand Prix as a term of comparison
The very current topic "cost reduction in Formula 1" finds an alternative opinion. Is that of Alain Prost: the Frenchman, in fact, revealed that at the time of the Prost Grand Prix, a team he owned that raced in Formula 1 from 1997 to 2001, the expenses related to the engines were decidedly higher than today. "In 2001 I was paying $28 million for my engines and in 2002 I would have had to pay 31 if the team had survived." – explained Prost ad Auto Plus. "Today we are between 15 and 17 million, so engine manufacturers have a lot of effort, especially considering that the units are much more complex”.
The special advisor to the Renault then brought out a certain skepticism regarding the future projects of Liberty Medium, aimed at a more economical and balanced Formula 1: “Simplifying the engines, making them cheaper and removing the MGU-H, that's fine, but they must actually become less expensive. And if we talk about budget reduction, then we need to look at the other chapters of the technical regulation, such as that of aerodynamics. This is not very clear.".
