F1 | Mercedes makes another mistake: W15 complicated in Melbourne too
Shovlin: "Lewis said we had gone in the wrong direction with the changes to the car"
As in the first two weekends, also in free practice Melbourne la Mercedes had to face several problems. Russell e Hamilton they closed the second session in sixth and eighteenth position: if the young Englishman found himself a little more comfortable on the W15, despite a few too many errors in the qualifying simulation, the seven-time world champion never got in tune with the car, and the few bad laps in the long run certainly didn't help in a situation that becomes more and more complex after each official session.
“The first session was good – admitted Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes' head of track engineering. The changes we made to improve our high-speed cornering performance and reduce bumps after Jeddah seemed in the right direction. Overall then, the car performed quite well. Unfortunately in PL2 we didn't go so well: Lewis said we had gone in the wrong direction with the changes, and he had to live with these problems throughout the session. George had a complicated car due to the wind compared to the morning session. We could have done better on the flying lap, but overall it's clear that there is work to be done to improve the car."
