F1 | Mercedes, Russell promotes the Halo: “Visibility is excellent”
The English driver, protagonist of the tests in Hungary, praises the controversial protection system which from 2018 will be mandatory for everyone
After much moaning, theHalo finally receives positive feedback: promoting the protection system, which from 2018 will be mandatory for all single-seaters, was George Russell, reserve pilot of the Mercedes. The young Englishman, during the test at the Hungaroring, had the opportunity to test the Halo for the first time and was positively surprised: "I had much better visibility than I imagined. At the end of the day, when the sun was going down – says Russell – the Halo shielded the sun from my eyes, so I saw more than I usually do on the circuit at 17.30pm.
There are some small sore points, however: "Initially It was difficult to get in and out of the car – continues the Englishman – However, all it takes is a little experience, finding the right techniques to understand where to put your arms and everything else. After some tests, I was able to get in and out of the cockpit without any problems. There could be another obstacle at the start, where the visibility of red lights is reduced".
Turning attention to the two days of testing, Russell said he was satisfied with the work carried out: “Other teams have focused their attention on low fuel consumption tests, thus reaching the top of the standings. We had slightly different goals. We have deduced a lot of important information".
