F1 | McLaren, Ricciardo disappointment: “I would never have thought of such a result”

There is a lot of disappointment for Daniel Ricciardo. The McLaren driver will start from the eighth row tomorrow in the Portuguese Grand Prix, thus failing to even make the cut for Q1. Much more was expected from the Australian, who seemed much more at ease around the curves of Portimao aboard his MCL35M, but evidently something didn't go right, and tomorrow he will be forced to make an important comeback to ensure the team at least a good haul of points.

“It was a frustrating day – Ricciardo admitted. In free practice everything went quite well, so I would never have thought of a result like that. I don't really understand what went wrong, we'll have to analyze it carefully. In Q1 I went well with the mediums, the car was fast, while in the lap with the softs the traffic at the start of the lap didn't help me. We tried to do everything we could, starting again for a new attempt but the performance dropped very quickly. Sixteenth position is very far from my goal. I have to sleep on it and wake up tomorrow morning ready to give my best."
