F1 | McLaren, Alonso: “We need a crazy race”
Vandoorne: "Not a competitive weekend for us"
The English team concluded the qualification for the Brazilian Grand Prix with the eighteenth time Fernando Alonso and the twentieth of Stoffel vandoorne.
Fernando Alonso: “My qualifying lap was still enjoyable, and with the new tires and light fuel these cars work well, although obviously not fast enough to get through the sessions. In dry conditions, we saw already on Friday that we didn't have the pace. We were slow all weekend and we were slow in qualifying too, so there are no surprises. There is nothing we can do now other than try to improve in the race and try to help the team with some points. We need a bit of rain or a crazy race to benefit from it, as in terms of pace we are perhaps not fast enough. We start from the back, so we can take risks and bet on the strategy”.
Stoffel Vandoorne: “It hasn't been the best weekend for us so far. Already yesterday morning we saw that we were never up to speed, and it's a shame to have confirmed this in qualifying. We can never benefit from the wet conditions in qualifying because it never rains at the right time for us. We'll see what we can do in the race. We have nothing to lose and hopefully time will give us something to allow us to gamble a little, because I think this is the only opportunity we have to progress. We weren't really competitive all weekend here. In Mexico, tire degradation played to our advantage, but here it looks like that won't be the case, so I hope the weather does it for us.".
