F1 | Marko: “We tried to reverse the layout of the Red Bull Ring for one of the GPs”
"The possibility was discussed with the FIA, but to carry out the project too important changes to the track were needed", stated the Austrian
Interviewed by the Austrian media, Helmut Marko revealed a curious anecdote regarding the next Styrian and Austrian Grands Prix scheduled between June and July, underlining how Red Bull tried to reverse the layout of the Red Bull Ring for one of the two races.
According to what was declared by the Austrian consultant, Red Bull and the FIA would have tried to find approval for the "reverse" Spiuelberg circuit, an aspect which would have allowed the organizers to carry out one of the two races in the opposite direction to the "traditional" one. Unfortunately, the idea required too many changes to be made in just seven days, which led the parties involved to abandon the project.
“Together with the FIA we have created a plan to reverse the layout of Red Bull,” said Helmut Marko. “The idea was to carry out one of the two Grands Prix in Austria with a different configuration than the standard one. Unfortunately, from the measurements carried out together with Michael Masi, some dangerous points emerged, such as for example in turns 1 and 3. In the first an extremely dangerous braking would have been carried out in a sector without special protections for the public, while in the second the " crest” would have made the braking blind. Too complex changes had to be made in seven days and therefore we chose to give up on the idea."
