F1 | Honda, Watanabe: “Happy to work with Alonso again”

The renewal of Fernando Alonso with Aston Martin will lead the Spaniard to return to work with Honda from 2026, the year of the introduction of the new technical regulations on the power unit side, which will equip Lawrence Stroll's team. The relationship between the two-time world champion and the Japanese engine engineer was far from idyllic, with the famous phrase "GP2 engine" pronounced at Suzuka 2015.

But since then a lot of water has passed under the bridge and time has allowed the two parties to defuse tensions to create a new beginning, as reported by Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe.

“When I worked with him from 2015 to 2017 it was a very difficult situation for both Honda and the team,” Watanabe told Motorsport.com. “It was a particularly frustrating period in our history and there were times when our relationship was tense."

Watanabe then, continuing to discuss Alonso, said: “But I think we have become stronger because we have overcome that frustration. Alonso has also been very involved since then. I am happy that we can overcome that painful experience together and fight together for victory once again. I hope we can aim for the championship together and win together."
