Another problem for Haas, in particular for Romain Grosjean: the French driver didn't even have the opportunity to set a time on the wet Spielberg track due to a suspected hydraulic problem on his VF20. Kevin Magnussen, however, was able to take advantage of the particular track conditions to aim for an unexpected result: the Dane managed to get into Q2, but had to settle for fifteenth place on the grid.

"We had a problem with the ERS water pump – Grosjean quickly explained – it didn't work at all and so I couldn't get any energy back during the one installation round we did. I couldn't complete even one lap. It's a shame, but above all it's a missed opportunity".

However, the tone of Kevin Magnussen, who entered Q2, was different.

"It was fun shooting in these conditions. There was a bit of aquaplaning, but it wasn't a huge discomfort. I'm happy with the outcome of the qualification. Fifteenth position isn't exactly the best, but I don't think we could have done more, so I'm happy. We will fight tomorrow to get into the points".
