F1 | Haas, Grosjean and Magnussen: “More competitive car than Austria”
The two Haas drivers classified in twelfth and fourteenth position in the first free practice session
Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean were separated only by Alexander Albon during the first free practice session: the two Haas drivers classified in twelfth and fourteenth position respectively. The Frenchman tested the track only with the medium compound, while Magnussen also tried the harder compound.
During the afternoon, on a wet track, only Grosjean took to the track after completing 6 laps: eighth best time for him, who had not tested the VF-20 in the rain in Austria, due to a problem encountered before qualifying in Styrian Grand Prix.
"It was the first time in the wet for me this afternoon, as we didn't manage to qualify in Austria. I managed to complete a few laps, and the car seemed fine. The first free practice session also went well. We were more competitive than Austria. I haven't tried the soft compound yet, so I don't know what our pace will be. In any case, I am happy with the car. There are some limitations, but we've made some set-up changes that put us in the right direction. The whole team is positive, the mood was high after the session. Obviously a big variable will be the weather, but I think we will be ready even in case of rain".
Only one installation lap, however, for Magnussen during the second free practice session.
"The first free practice session was positive. It's fun to drive here at the Hungaroring, I'd say the weekend started off on the right foot. We weren't able to ride much in the wet. I did an installation lap with the intermediate tires to check the conditions, which were obviously slippery. I can't wait to get on track tomorrow and find out what the track will be like, dry or wet. These conditions make everything more fun and exciting. Everything can change and you have more chances to do something special, but also ruin everything: we always choose something special".
