F1 | Erdogan and Carey lay the foundations for the return of the Turkish Grand Prix
Everything is ready for Istanbul Park's return to the world calendar
In an official meeting held in the city of Ankara, the capital of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Chase Carey laid the foundations for a sensational return of the Turkish Grand Prix starting next season.
Malaysia's sudden farewell has in fact "unblocked" a slot for 2018 and the Turkish Prime Minister, a huge motoring enthusiast, would like to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to bring Istanbul Park back into the world Formula One calendar.
The race, we remember, has been missing since the 2011 season, when Sebastian Vettel climbed to the top step of the podium. From that moment on, given the low turnout of the public and the strictly financial issues, Turkey chose to say goodbye to the Circus, focusing on other internal diatribes in the country.
The meeting between the new "super Boss" of F1 and the Turkish Prime Minister took place yesterday and the agreement seems almost done: all that is missing is the signatures to make everything official.
“I confirm the meeting between our Premier and Chase Carey for the return of the Turkish Grand Prix to the calendar”, said Vural Ak, boss of the Turkish circuit, to the Automotive Journalists Association. “The discussions are quite underway and we already have a general agreement for the return starting from 2018”.
On the nature of the meeting that took place yesterday he added: “We have agreed some guidelines to follow over the coming weeks and hope to have everything in black and white in the coming weeks. We haven't signed anything yet, but we are quite optimistic."
