F1 | Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso regains confidence at Spa with fifth place
"We were a little worried, the team modified some characteristics of the car and the risk paid off"
Fernando Alonso ends on Belgian Grand Prix in fifth position. A good revenge for the Spaniard, after the difficulties of Friday's qualifying and the Saturday day dedicated to the Sprint. Starting from ninth position on the medium compound, Fernando immediately recovered three positions at the start; he then overcomes easily Sainz, with the car damaged after the start, and is one of the first to return to the pits to put the medium compound back on. For the final stint, the Asturian instead opted for the soft, thus taking fifth place and ten points. A breath of fresh air, after some difficult weekends, but it's not enough: since returning from holidays, the Aston Martin he will have to work hard to return to the levels shown at the beginning of the season.
“I'm lucky at the start: I made up a few positions at the starteau rouge, but then I got worried, I thought I wouldn't be able to maintain the position during the first stint. We were fast, we kept a Mercedes and a McLaren behind us, so we fought it out. It's good news for the team before the summer break – declared Fernando – the car was very good today, this gives me confidence. It's a great circuit and, after that Silverstone, we were a little worried about our performances. The team modified some characteristics of the car and the risk paid off."
Fernando completes the first part of the season with six podiums to his credit, a number he hopes to increase in the remaining ten events,
“It was an incredible first part of the season: we are third in the constructors' championship and third in the drivers' championship. A goal that seemed impossible before the start of the season. The whole team did an incredible job: now we recharge our batteries to come back stronger."
