F1 | Alpine, Fernando Alonso: “A point is always better than nothing”
The Spaniard recovers from last position, but a double pit stop under the Virtual Safety Car destroys his race
Fernando Alonso is a lion and gives Spielberg a show. The Spanish driver, after the problem yesterday just a few moments before the start of the Sprint, was forced to start from the last row on the grid - the team replaced the Power Unit of the number 14. On hard tires he makes his way through his rivals , establishing some good battles: first with Zhou and Magnussen, then with Yuki Tsunoda, with the Japanese hugging him on the grass and Fernando admonishing him as if he wasn't racing at more than 200 km/h. Then comes the five-way fight, in the DRS train, with Zhou, Magnussen, Norris and Schumacher, where Fernando tries. At the Virtual Safety Car, he returned to the pits twice due to strange vibrations with the first set mounted, losing positions in the standings - the Asturian was fighting for seventh place. In the end, he managed to gain the position over Valtteri Bottas at the last moment, returning to the points zone in tenth place. A result that does not do justice to the abilities of this driver, as does the world championship ranking, as it is once again betrayed by the reliability of his vehicle.
"One point is always better than none, considering we started from the last row. I think this is one of my best races this season, apart from Silverstone. I think we were fighting for sixth or seventh place, but then I felt some strange vibrations from the tires during the Virtual Safety Car – explained Alonso – Since we were still on VSC regime, we decided to stop again and put together another set. Unfortunately, with the additional pit, we lost some positions and I had to fight again in the final laps. In the end we gained tenth position. Scoring just one point after a race like this is really a shame, but we can be happy with the team's pace and performance over the weekend.".
