F1 | Alpine, Alonso: “Without the damage I could have aspired to fifth position”

The Spaniard damaged the floor during a long run in his first attempt in Q3, ruining his chances for the Sprint Race

F1 | Alpine, Alonso: “Without the damage I could have aspired to fifth position”

Fernando Alonso was getting used to crazy performances, but today, after two red flags in Q3, the Spaniard stopped in ninth position. Damage to the bottom of the A522, reported at the start of Q3, compromised the car's performance, preventing him from fighting for the positions he was used to. In the Sprint Race he will start from the fifth row next to Lewis Hamilton: the two will immediately aim for the exhausts of the two Haas cars to try to gain points and positions.

"The car was very competitive today and it's nice to be back in Q3. Unfortunately, my bottom got damaged after going long in the first attempt of Q3 and we lost some performance due to the damage – explained Fernando – I think that before the damage was done we could have aimed for fifth or sixth position, it would have been an excellent placement for tomorrow's Sprint. From ninth position, however, we will try to recover some positions, and I am sure we will succeed. In any case it was a competitive Friday for us and I hope to be able to have some fun in the Sprint Race as well as in Sunday's race, to score some points".

Updates: Fernando Alonso will start from eighth place on the track in the Sprint Race after the penalty given to Sergio Perez.
