F1 | Alfa Romeo, Raikkonen: “There was nothing we could do”

In the Monza Grand Prix, won by Pierre Gasly, a note of merit must however be given to the Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN team, for having given emotions to the Italian fans. Kimi Raikkonen, after the second start, was in the top positions but unfortunately the soft tire deteriorated quickly, forcing the Finn to finish thirteenth.

“In the end it was a very disappointing result but there was nothing we could do. When the red flag came we only had the soft tires left, after having used the mediums at the start, and those put us in a very difficult position. They were good for fighting and defending in the first laps after the restart, but when they deteriorated, we were left exposed. Up until the red flag we were in a good position: the car was behaving well and things were going well for us, but after that we couldn't fight anymore."

Unlucky race also for Antonio Giovinazzi who received the 10 second stop and go penalty for entering the pits even though the pit lane was still closed; he finished 16th:

“We finished the race without points after a crazy race, which is a shame, because at the beginning everything was fine. We knew a top ten finish was unlikely, but it's still disappointing that a penalty drops you to the back of the pack when you're in the top positions. We will have to investigate how the situation that led to the stop&go took place: in the moments following the call for a Safety Car, everything happens very quickly and you react to what is happening around you. I was just focused on getting back to the pits. I have to leave everything behind and focus on next week's race, another home Grand Prix, to try to do a better job."
