Marchionne wanted to equip Toro Rosso with Alfa Romeo engines
The indiscretion leaked by the German newspaper is sensational
According to some rumors revealed by Auto Bild Motorsport, Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne wanted to equip Toro Rosso with Alfa Romeo engines. But the negotiation failed – as a source close to Red Bull explained – “due to the cost which would have been around 30 million euros“. In the event of a positive outcome, Marchionne would have guaranteed the transfer of the initial developments to the new engine.
A proposal also made to Red Bull, which instead preferred to confirm - after a cloying media soap opera - the PU Renault branded TAG-Heur.
Although the agreement did not come to fruition, the Faenza team will have “made in Italy” PUs in 2016, by virtue of the agreement signed with the Cavallino team. Even if the engines that will power the single-seaters of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr will be those of 2015, re-approved by the FIA.
