Alonso: “It was a very lucky race for us”

Fernando Alonso declared his satisfaction with third place in the British Grand Prix after concerns over Ferrari's lack of pace at the weekend.

Although the two Ferraris showed strong race pace, they had only been 10th and 12th in qualifying.

While Felipe Massa recovered from his tire blowout to cross the finish line in seventh place, Alonso fought back to third.

“Overall I think it was a very lucky race for us,” said Alonso.

“Looking at the tire problems for some of the drivers, the drivers who haven't had any problems must feel lucky.”

“I have mixed feelings. I'm happy with the points, because we closed the gap a bit in this race, but we saw this weekend that the pace wasn't good enough.”

“I have faith in the team. There is a lot of work to do, but we are united.”

Alonso admitted that it was a better day than other races where Ferrari had been potentially competitive, but unlucky.

“There were a few other Sundays when we lost some points where maybe I would have been more optimistic. Today we got some important points,” she said.

He was lucky to have escaped several accidents in the race, such as the tire blowout of Sergio Perez's McLaren just when he was trying to overtake him in the final laps.

“I had two difficult moments. When Sergio's tire blew, I was lucky because I lost contact by maybe a centimetre,” said Alonso.

“At first I locked up the tires and almost lost the front wing.”
