Newey: “Wheldon's death is a shock to the motoring world”

Adrian Newey states that the death of Dan wheldon it is a shock for the motoring world, reminding everyone that we always need to learn from these sad episodes.

Even if F1 hasn't had any deaths since Ayrton Senna died in Williams designed by Newey in 1994, the Red Bull designer believes that we should never stop learning from these events.

“In my case, having designed a car in which one of your drivers later lost his life, I think there would have been something wrong if I hadn't asked myself what I was doing”.

“In the four years I've been in IndyCars, I've been fortunate enough not to have any tragic accidents, and no one has ever been seriously injured. Basically, however, you race on an oval with concrete walls and lots of cars running at very high speed and it can be a source of big accidents, especially with cars like these."

“It's always a terrible moment when someone dies in these circumstances, no matter what category. It's a shock for the sport and we always have to learn. We are always aware that the risk exists, but it is one thing to be aware of it, the other is when things really happen."
