The German team has long-term contracts with Hamilton and Rosberg

Wolff: “Alonso will not join Mercedes in the short term”

Toto Wolff has denied rumors of a short-term interest in Fernando Alonso. Rumors have recently circulated of a mutual interest between the Spaniard and the German manufacturer but the team reacted immediately by suggesting that Nico Rosberg's contract is on the way to renewal.

But speaking of a possible arrival of Alonso alongside Lewis Hamilton, Wolff seemed less likely. Furthermore, speaking to the Spanish press about the rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg, he explained that the friction between the two never reached the bad situation that arose between Alonso and Hamilton seven years ago at McLaren.

“We will leave them free to fight, until the war becomes unfair. There won't be a conflict like the one between Alonso and Hamilton. If something like this had happened there would have been serious consequences."

Speaking in more detail about the transfer rumours, Wolff explained that the Spaniard will not wear Mercedes colours, "at least not in the short term" adding that Rosberg and Hamilton "have long-term contracts".

“Fernando is one of the best drivers on the grid, but it is not in our plans to change the team lineup.” Meanwhile, today's news is that Lewis Hamilton was sighted near the Ferrari factory in Maranello.
