Williams, Russell: “We're going in the right direction”

P17 and P18 for Williams in Sochi qualifying. George Russell's car excelled between the two single-seaters from the Grove team, ahead of its twin FW42 driven by Robert Kubica by more than a tenth.

Tomorrow the Polish driver will start from the back of the grid having mounted the fourth ICE, TC and MGU-H.

"I think it was a good session. In Singapore we had a lot of traffic. We were planning to go out in front of the group this time, we didn't make it but that didn't compromise us. It was just a little frustrating fighting with guys trying to pass me. However the lap was really good and our pace was closer than we expected. Slowly we are taking steps and going in the right direction,” Russell said.

"It's always nice to drive on new circuits. Most of the corners are quite similar to each other, they are very short and therefore you need to have speed and good stability. Overall it is a challenging track, especially in finding the initial balance. It's been a difficult weekend so far and I expect tomorrow to be the same”, said Kubica.
