Williams, good race pace in Friday's free practice
Both riders surprised by the total lack of grip on the track
La Williams closes free practice Mexican GP setting the seventh fastest time with Valtteri Bottas (1.22.721) and the tenth with Felipe Massa (1.23.289). At the beginning of the session, the Finnish driver also had a problem with the brakes on the straight and crashed violently, fortunately without any particular consequences for the car. Williams, despite the grip problems that affected all the teams, demonstrated an excellent pace on the long run, thanks to the use of medium compounds which go particularly well with the Fw37
“We rode quite a bit today, which was a positive thing. The conditions out there are very difficult - Bottas said - with very little overall grip due to the very slippery asphalt. We have to work a lot to understand how to find more grip and make the tires work better. So far, however, the sensations are positive, we can have a good weekend."
More or less the same tone the words of the Brazilian Felipe Sponge: “It was difficult free practice. It's one of the slipperiest tracks I've ever driven on in my entire life. It was difficult to keep the car on the track, especially when it started raining. We still have a lot of work to do to understand the car, the tyres, the track and also how the weather will evolve. It will be a weekend where it will be important to delve into every detail".
