Webber: “Surprised by the three-stop strategy adopted by the team”
According to the Australian, the two stops were feasible at Suzuka
Mark Webber admitted he was surprised by Red Bull's choice to set his strategy on three stops compared to his teammate's two. Sebastian Vettel went on to win the Japanese GP just ahead of the Australian and Romain Grosjean.
“I was a little surprised by the move to three stops,” said Webber after the race. “I asked if it was the right thing to do. Seb was a little longer, but the goal of the two stops was within reach. I felt I could make the laps we needed. In the end Seb had an excellent race, his strategy worked perfectly” commented Webber, a little ironically towards the team.
“The three stops were absolutely not ridiculous but they were high risk and involved overtaking. Seb managed to overtake us both. At that point the battle was no longer with Seb, we had already done enough damage by going to three stops while Seb was on two."
Passing Grosjean was not easy: “At the end of the race the DRS is no longer so efficient as you are already on the limiter. When you come up behind someone you always want to get past them quickly. I was hoping to do it sooner, knowing that his tires would be in trouble towards the end of the race."
